Martin Luther celebrates his first mass. The idea of being a priest terrifies Luther because he believes it puts him in direct contact with God — specifically, the body and blood of Christ whenever he celebrates Mass. Martin Luther is absolutely convinced that he is completely unworthy of such a task.

In fact, he nearly collapses when he first celebrates Mass on May 2. For his entire life, Martin Luther will struggle with doubt about his standing with God and whether he or any other human being could be worthy of God's grace.
