Pope Pius III is born Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini in Sienna, Italy. The nephew of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II, he will be appointed by his uncle to the position of archbishop at just 21 years old and to cardinal shortly after that.

Unlike many others who achieve high positions in the church due to family connections or wealth, Pope Pius III has a strong sense of personal integrity and as a result becomes a good candidate for the papacy. All the different factions will trust him, and he will be able to set about reforming various abuses within the Church — something many popes try to do.

Pope Pius III does make some progress with this by drawing up new regulations, reducing papal expenditures, and seeking to convene a general Council. Unfortunately, his health will be so poor that he dies just 10 days after he is formally coronated.
