Prince Louis Joins Simon de Montfort in Crusade of Southern France

King Louis VIII
Source: Wikipedia

French Prince Louis, the future Louis VIII and son of King Philippe II, joins Simon de Montfort's crusading in southern France. Louis had taken a vow to embark on a Crusade two years prior, and his father has been urging him to fulfill it.

King Philip II Augustus has little authority over the relatively independent lands in southern France, and a successful crusade against the ruling nobles there will greatly expand the power of the French monarchy.
