Pope Gregory VII dies.

Gregory worked hard to create important reforms in the Church, one of the most important of which was the further development of papal primacy over secular rulers in the context of the investiture of clergy.

This, in turn, will lead to the Investiture Conflict — one of the most serious conflicts between church and state during the Middle Ages.
