Pope John XII dies. Pope John XII is only 18 when elected, which he achieves solely because he is the son of Alberic II, absolute ruler of Rome.
The corrupt election of Pope John XII was part of a long line of corrupt acts involving the papacy. There were so many over the preceding six decades that the era got its own name: the Pornocracy of the Papacy. Pope John XII is the last, but he may also be the worst, turning the Lateran palace into a virtual brothel.
Liudprand of Cremona writes:
"They testified about his adultery, which they did not see with their own eyes, but nonetheless knew with certainty: he had fornicated with the widow of Rainier, with Stephana his father's concubine, with the widow Anna, and with his own niece, and he made the sacred palace into a whorehouse.
They said that he had gone hunting publicly; that he had blinded his confessor Benedict, and thereafter Benedict had died; that he had killed John, cardinal subdeacon, after castrating him; and that he had set fires, girded on a sword, and put on a helmet and cuirass."
Pope John XII made a deal with German king Otto I: protect John's claim to the papacy in exchange for being crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Otto agreed, yet Pope John XII quickly began conspiring against him. Otto replaced him with Pope Leo VIII, but John XII took the papacy back and Leo fled. Before Otto can return, John XII dies and Pope Benedict V is elected. He is deposed by Pope Leo VIII, however.
