Pope Benedict II dies.

Although he had been elected pope in 683, Emperor Constantine IV refused to confirm his election for almost a year, so Benedict II wasn't installed as pope until 684.

Because of this extraordinary delay, he convinced the emperor to let the imperial exarch in Ravenna, the emperor's personal representative to the West, to approve of papal consecrations.
