Pope John II dies. Born Mercurius, Pope John II appears to be the first since Peter to have adopted a new papal name (regnal name).

Pope John II also managed to maintain good relations Athalaric, king of the Ostrogoths, even though Athalaric is a follower of the Arian heresy created by Arius of Alexandria.

When it came to another popular heresy, Monophysitism, Pope John II was less successful at maintaining good will because he was pressured by Byzantine emperor Justinian to support it. This preserves the policies of his predecessor, Pope Hormisdas, and arouses the anger of orthodox Christians.
