Israeli forces assassinate Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, spiritual leader of Hamas, in the Gaza Strip. A blind quadriplegic in a wheelchair, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin has claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks on Israel.

Many leaders around the world condemn the killing, arguing that it would make achieving a peaceful settlement with the Palestinians more difficult. Israel, however, argues that it has a right to protect itself against terrorism by killing the leaders of terrorist groups.
