The Wisconsin State Senate approves of an amendment to the state constitution (20-13) that would ban both same-sex marriages and civil unions. In a state-wide referendum, voters approve the amendment 59.4%-40.6%.

The amendment states:

"Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state."
