Abu Abbas, leader of the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro, dies in Iraq while in U.S. custody. Born Muhammad Zaidan, Abu Abbas was also founder of the the Palestine Liberation Front (P.L.F.).

Anonymous American officials reported that he had died of natural causes, but the PLF accuses America of assassinating Abu Abbas.
