The US House of Representatives votes 295-125 to support Judge Roy Moore, a local judge in Alabama who has refused to remove a Ten Commandments plaque from his courtroom. House Republicans introduced the measure with only one day's notice, no hearings, and just 40 minutes time allowed for debate.
Representative Robert Aderholt of Alabama, whose district encompasses Judge Roy Moore's courtroom, says:
"It doesn't force anyone to believe in God nor force anyone to obey the Ten Commandments. It merely reaffirms the importance of a vital religious symbol."
Alabama Gov. Fob James has promised to deploy the National Guard and state troopers rather than see the display come down.
