Northern Ireland's provincial government and parliament are suspended and Britain imposes direct rule from London for one year. There has been an massive increase in the amount of violence over the past two years. In 1972 alone over 500 people will be killed and there are over 1,300 bombings by the Provisional IRA alone in this political and religious conflict.
The imposition of direct rule from London is intended to be temporary. The British government expects to restore Stormont parliament and government once they can find a compromise that will be acceptable to both nationalists and unionists. While the Northern Ireland Assembly is established in June, 1973, an actual, stable solution won't be achieved for decades.
