In a violation of Tibetan political and religious autonomy, which they had pledged to uphold, the Chinese government dissolves the Tibetan government and replaces the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso with the Panchen Lama.

Chinese authorities seek to capture and imprison the Dalai Lama, but he successfully escapes to India and remains in exile henceforth.
