Iraqi leader Abd al-Karim Qasim announces that his country is withdrawing from the Baghdad Pact. Iraq's monarchy was overthrown in a coup led by General Abd-al-Karim Qssim and Colonel Abd-al-Salam Muhammad Arif last year.

The coup leaders declared Iraq a republic and Qassim was named prime minister
