In Iraq, an attempted coup is launched by Colonel Abdel Wahab Shawaf. Backed by units of the army and based in Mosul, Shawaf alleges that the government of Abd al-Karim Qasim is dominated by communists. Abdel Wahab Shawaf is killed by one of his own men before the mutiny get very far.

Iraq's monarchy was overthrown in a coup led by General Abd-al-Karim Qasim and Colonel Abd-al-Salam Muhammad Arif last year. The coup leaders declared Iraq a republic and Qasim was named prime minister.
