In a ceremony in Damascus, Syria, Crown Prince Saif al-Islam Mohammed al-Badr of Yemen signs an agreement linking his nation with the United Arab States, a federation led by Gamal Abdel Nasser and which also included Egypt and Syria.

Unlike the original agreement between Egypt and Syria, this one leaves Yemen with its own independent government and international identity. Imam Ahmed will remain king of Yemen and they will retain their own ambassadors around the world.
