Indian Government Imposes Martial Law on Calcutta Over Religious Violence

The Indian government places the Calcutta suburb of Howrah under martial law in order to stem the rising tide of religious violence in the area. The government blames Hindu extremists for inciting religious tension.

India's Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan says:

"It needs pointing out that the Hindu leaders used a minor incident, wholly non-communal in character which had taken place weeks earlier... to fan the flames of communal passions against Muslims."
