Alojzije Viktor Stepinac, archbishop of Zagreb, expresses his preference that the state of Yugoslavia end and an independent state of Croatia be created.
"All in all, Croats and Serbs are of two worlds, northpole and southpole, never will they be able to get together unless by a miracle of God.
The schism [Eastern Orthodox Christianity] is the greatest curse in Europe, almost greater than Protestantism. Here there is no moral, no principles, no truth, no justice, no honesty."
Rhetoric like this helps provide a moral justification for the mass slaughter of Eastern Orthodox Serbs by Catholic Croats, sometimes with Catholic priests and monks directly participating in the murders.
