Prominent political figures are just a few of the many Austrians who are committing suicide rather than face whatever the Nazi Party has in store for them. Major Emil Fey, former Vice-Chancellor and a leader of the anti-Nazi Heimwehr, kills his wife, their son, and then himself. Friedrich Reitlinger, an important industrialist in Tyrol, convinces his daughter to shoot him and then herself.
Many hundreds, primarily Jews, will kill themselves after the Anschluss of Austria with Nazi Germany. On March 19 they will be 54 Jewish funerals in one day; on March 21 there will be 112 Jewish funerals.
