Adolf Hitler enters the city of Vienna to celebrate the Anschluss of Austria. When he last lived in Vienna he barely had enough money to eat; today he enters with the crowds cheering him as conqueror.
At the same time, the economic motivations for Germany's control of Austria are becoming more clear. An article written by Leonhard Obrascher in the magazine Wirtschaftsdienstsays:
"In Austria are to be found lead, graphite, silver, gold, copper, rare metals and last, but not least, magnesium in such quantities that Austrian magnesium still leads the world. Water power in Austria has not been exploited anywhere near fully. It could help the aluminum industry and various other branches of production to attain unheard prosperity.
Austria is by no means poor. All that is needed is that these treasures on Austrian soil find a master with the will to act."
