While visiting Rome, Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber of Bavaria observes Pope Pius XI praise Hitler's seizure of power in Germany in the expectation that he will aggressively move against communism.

Cardinal von Faulhaber is quoted as later telling a conference of Bavarian bishops that Pope Pius XI had

"publicly praised the Chancellor Adolf Hitler for the stand which the latter had taken against Communism."

Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII and current Vatican Secretary of State, instructs the German envoy to the Vatican that Adolf Hitler should not interpret these words of praise from Pope Pius XI on Germany's anti-communist crusade

"as an indirect endorsement of the action of the Reich Chancellor and the government against Communism."
That's exactly what the Nazis will do, however, and with some justification.
