Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is born. As the first woman on the United States Supreme Court, O'Connor will become one of the most recognizable and powerful women in America. She will favor decisions which are written as narrowly as possible to fit just the case which is before her rather than more sweeping decisions that have greater implications for other issues down the road.
At first Sandra Day O'Connor will be one of the most conservative justices on the Supreme Court. Over time, as the Court itself becomes more conservative, she becomes more of a swing vote and other justices can be seen writing their own opinions in a way to attract her support.
