The February Revolution begins in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), Russia. Demonstrators hungry for bread begin clashing with government troops sent to preserve order. Soon the protests will spread and too few soldiers will be willing to side with the government against the people.
It's known as the February Revolution because it begins in February according to the Julian calendar which is still being used in Russia at this time. In Europe, though, the same events start on this day in March.
