Maurice Merleau-Ponty is born in Rochefort-sur-mer, France. The first French philosopher to use the term "phenomenology" in the title of a major work, Merleau-Ponty will show how and why phenomenology should be an important philosophical concern.

This will lead to him being commonly regarded as a proponent of phenomenology even though he does little with the work of Edmund Husserl. Maurice Merleau-Ponty will also share many of the same concerns as Sartre, even thoughhe is not an existentialist.
