Jewish historian Leopold Zunz dies in Berlin. The primary interest of Leopold Zunz may have been his desire to identify some sort of "essence" of Judaism which remained constant and absolute despite the myriad of cultural changes and non-Jewish influences.

One of the most important Jewish historians of the 19th century, Zunz was instrumental in creating the Wissenschaft des Judentums ("Science of Judaism") in 1819. This movement focused on the study of Jewish literature and culture with the intellectual tools created by modern scholarship.
