A constitutional convention is held by Mormons in Salt Lake City as part of an effort to create a U.S. Territory and, eventually, a state. The original idea is to establish a single territory encompassing what is today Utah, Nevada, Arizona, parts of California, Wyoming, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, and Idaho.

This would have given Mormons direct control over a significant swath of the continent, something the U.S. government will reject..
