Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon church, arrives in Far West, Missouri. He comes from a poor family in rural New York, commonly named the "Burned Over District." In 1823, Joseph Smith claimed to have had a vision which led him to the discovery of Golden Tablets with sacred writings.
