Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, founder of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Hebrew Union College, is born. Wise will emigrate from Bohemia to the United States in 1846 and, in 1854, will be named rabbi at a Cincinnati congregation.

Early on Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise won't interested in creating major changes or reforms in Judaism, but over time he comes to see that a great many changes will be needed for Judaism more viable in America.
