This is the date of the first official St. Patrick's Day in America. Organized by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston, it's not a particularly Catholic event - at this time, the American colonies are mostly Protestant.

Rather than a religious festival or a celebration of Catholicism, it's used as a day for Irish immigrants to honor and remember their homeland. So while it's a day named after a Catholic priest, the original St. Patrick's Day is more secular than sectarian.
