Roger Williams is granted a charter to colonize Rhode Island. While in Rhode Island Roger Williams will create the first Baptist church in America. He will also be among the first in America to articulate the concept of separating of church and government, thus opposing the American tendency to have official, state supported churches.
This is why Roger Williams will be unpopular among his contemporaries. He is a very principled leader: even though he vehemently opposes the religious views of groups like the Quakers, he will never allow them to be repressed or persecuted.
