Pope Innocent XII is born Antonio Pignatelli in the Kingdom of Naples. The conclave to elect Pope Innocent XII will take 5 months, with fierce divisions between the cardinals preventing them from arriving at a quick and easy choice. In the end, they picked Antonio Pignatelli as a compromise that was least objectionable to everyone involved.

Pignatelli will hold many offices in the Pope Urban VIII nuncio to three different cities and inquisitor in yet another. He chooses to name himself after Innocent XI, a hero of his and whose reign he hoped to emulate.

This will make him a reform pope who immediately cracks down on problems that have been plaguing the papal court for far too long — especially the age-old practice of papal nepotism. All pope are banned for all times from ever giving any relatives any estates, titles, or revenues. Pope Innocent XI will also create many charitable institutions, reform the papal budget, and even ease tensions with the French monarchy.
