The French Wars of Religion between the Protestants and Catholics end when Henri IV takes the throne. First, though, he had to convert from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. He is believed to have declared that Paris "vaut bien une messe" ("Paris is well worth a Mass").
He had been a Catholic once before, but in 1576 Henry of Navarre abandoned it and took up arms with Huguenot forces. Despite switching again, as king he will promote religious tolerance and equality for all his subjects.
