Waltham Abbey in Essex becomes the last monastery in England to transfer its allegiance from the Roman Catholic Church to the newly created Church of England under the leadership of King Henry VIII.

Waltham Abbey in Essex is also the burial site of King Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England and loser at the famous Battle of Hastings when William the Conqueror led the Normans to take over England.
