Saint Antoninus is born in Florence, Italy. As Archbishop of Florence and an active leader of the Dominican Observant movement, Antoninus will become one of the founders of modern moral theology and Christian social ethics.

He develops far more awareness and understanding of modern economic problems than most of his contemporaries and indeed many who come after.

Antoninus will argue, for example, that the state has a duty to insert itself into economic matters in order to protect the common good and ensure some basic level of social justice is preserved.
