Pope Zachary dies. Born in Calabria in the Byzantine Empire, Zachary was the last pope of the Byzantine Papacy and he is best known for his political accomplishments.

First, he reached agreements with the Lombards, a Germanic tribe that dominates northern Italy, which prevents the the exarchate of Ravenna from coming under their control.

Second, he established strong ties to the Franks and this will come in very useful when they are needed to help Rome against later Lombard military pressure.
