U.S.A.F. Orders Orthodox Jew Simcha Goldman to Stop Wearing a Yarmulke

The United States Air Force orders Simcha Goldman, an Orthodox Jew, to stop wearing a yarmulke because it violates the military dress code. Goldman will challenge this decision in the courts in a case which becomes known as Goldman v. Weinberger. The Supreme Court will vote 5-4 to uphold the military dress code.

According to the decision:

"Our review of military regulations challenged on First Amendment grounds is far more deferential than constitutional review of similar laws or regulations designed for civilian society. ...

[W]hen evaluating whether military needs justify a particular restriction on religiously-motivated conduct, courts must give great deference to the professional judgment of military authorities concerning the relative importance of a particular military interest."
