Great Siege of Malta: The Maltese fort of St. Elmo falls to Turkish forces, but not until the defenders are able to inflict casualties that number in the thousands. This is the first stage of the Ottoman assault on the island of Malta

The knights and soldiers in Fort Saint Elmo have endured some of the worst fighting of the entire four month siege of the island. The Turks occupied higher ground on Mount Sciberras from which they can bombard the fort with canons.

After enduring the siege over the month, the defenders are no longer able to hold out, and the Ottoman Turks overrun the fort. All of the knights defending St. Elmo are killed, and just nine Maltese defenders survive because they swim across the harbor to safety. Fort Saint Elmo will be reduced to rubble, but after the Siege of Malta is over the fort will be rebuilt and strengthened.
