Pope John Paul II Condemns Consecration of Four Bishops by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre

Pope John Paul II, 1978

Pope John Paul II condemns the consecration of four bishops by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in Switzerland two days ago.

In his apostolic letter Ecclesia Dei he says that this consecration was "schismatic," and by virtue of canon 1382 of the Code of Canon Law the bishops and priests involved were automatically excommunicated.

As for Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the modern values of religious liberty, ecumenism and collegiality are religious equivalents of the tripartite slogan from the French Revolution: "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity." According to him, "Vatican II is 1789 in the church." Given that Lefebvre is both the son of a monarchist and an admirer of Charles Maurras, there is probably no better statement of his condemnation of the modern Catholic Church.

Rev. Francois Piver comments:

"A few of our people are anxious, but I can't say there is real fear about what the Vatican has done. We think the excommunications are null. Rome is excommunicating the real Catholics."

Cardinal Lustiger, who has long disagreed with Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, says:

"A single bishop cannot pretend to represent the whole church. The only positive word I can say is that in this love of God that has inspired you, follow the word of God and not the word of those who want to take you away from God. ...

I am very worried for all the people of good faith who have followed Monsignor Lefebvre, but who want to remain in the Catholic community. They do not understand what has happened. They have been fooled."

In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI lifts the excommunication of the four bishops because they repent of their participation in the consecration ceremony.
