Rev. Sun Myung Moon is sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $25,000 (plus the costs of prosecution) for tax fraud and obstruction of justice.

This conviction will be protested by many religious leaders who believe that Moon is being persecuted for his religious beliefs.

Commenting on his conviction, Moon tells the press:

"I would not be standing here today if my skin were white and my religion were Presbyterian. I am here today only because my skin is yellow and my religion is Unification Church. ... The ugliest things in this beautiful country of America are religious bigotry and racism."

The maximum sentence Moon could have received is five years for the conspiracy charge and three years for each of three tax evasion charges, all involving Moon's failure to report $150,000 in income from bank accounts and securities.

Sun Myung Moon will serve the full 18-month sentence in the Federal Correctional institution in Danbury, Connecticut.
