Justice Potter Stewart retires from the Supreme Court. While on the Supreme Court, Stewart has played an important role in the development of the court's decisions on civil liberties and criminal justice.

Potter Stewart's judicial philosophy and decisions are difficult to characterize, though. He has been a moderate on a Court evenly divided between conservatives and liberals. This means that he has often been a swing vote, sometimes joining conservatives and sometimes joining liberals.

There have been cases where he's supported civil liberties but also cases when he's gone in the other direction. Thus his record on most issues has been almost evenly split, much like the Supreme Court itself.
