In the third military coup in a decade, Ba'athists in Iraq remove Abd-al-Rahman Muhamad Arif. He is the younger brother of the previous coup leader, Abd-al-Salam Muhammad Arif, who helped overthrow the Iraqi monarchy in 1958, then overthrew the Ba'ath in 1963.

Coup leader General Ahmad Hasan al-Bakr becomes president and Saddam Hussein is named vice president.
