Himmler Visits Auschwitz & Orders it Expanded to More Quickly Kill the Jews

Heinrich Himmler, 1940

Today and tomorrow, Heinrich Himmler visits the Auschwitz death camp in Poland.

There are currently about 30,000 inmates in Auschwitz at this time, mostly Jews and Polish political prisoners. While here he witnesses a mass gassing of Jews and then instructs camp commandant Rudolf Höss to speed up his plans to expand Auschwitz in order to more quickly kill Jews who cannot work.

Höss is also promoted to SS Lieutenant Colonel.
