Clarence Darrow Arrives in Dayton to Assist the Defense of John Scopes Trial

Clarence Darrow Arrives in Dayton, Tennessee

Scopes Monkey Trial: Clarence Darrow arrives in Dayton, Tennessee, the night before John Scopes' trial in order to assist in his defense.

The presence of Darrow will have a profound impact on the course of the trial. The original strategy of the ACLU was to challenge the constitutionality of the Butler anti-evolution act, arguing that is a violation of individual rights and academic freedom.

Darrow instead argues first that evolution and the Bible don't necessarily conflict (he thinks they do, but wants to argue that others disagree and that's okay), and second that the fundamentalist Christianity behind the Butler Act is unreasonable.

Over the course of the trial, it becomes more and more a conflict between modernity and science (represented by Clarence Darrow) and fundamentalist Christianity (represented by William Jennings Bryan).
