Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Freiherr von Godin signs a recommendation to award the Iron Cross, First Class to Adolf Hitler. Already a recipient of the Iron Cross, Second Class, in 1914, Hitler receives this higher decoration even though he is only a Gefreiter (corporal).

Usually this rarer decoration goes to higher ranking officers, but he was recommended for the citation by Hugo Gutmann, a Jewish List adjutant.
