Carl Gustav Jung is awarded the MD degree by the University of Zürich. His dissertation, published in 1903, is titled "On the Psychology and Pathology of So-Called Occult Phenomena." Jung hadn't planned on studying psychiatry at all because it's generally held in low regard, but after reading his first psychiatric text he was hooked.

Jung saw in psychiatry a field that combines both biology and spirituality, the two subjects which interested him the most.
