Porter Rockwell and Abraham Owen Smoot, two Mormons visiting Kansas City, learn about President James Buchanan's declaration that the Utah Territory is in rebellion against the United States and that an army regiment is advancing to take control.

They make a hasty return to Utah to tell others and begin preparations. They inform Brigham Young that a U.S. Army regiment is on its way to Utah. The next day Young tells a large group of Mormons celebrating Pioneer Day and orders everyone to prepare for evacuation.

There has been massive popular and political pressure on President James Buchanan to do something about Utah. In the minds of mainstream Christians in the north, slavery and polygamy are twin evils that have afflicted America and both need to be eliminated.
