Carl Ludwig Nietzsche, father of Friedrich Nietzsche, dies. Born the same year as Richard Wagner, Carl Ludwig Nietzsche was a Protestant minister and schoolteacher.

Friedrich himself wrote about his father when he was fourteen:

"My father was preacher for this village and likewise for the neighboring villages of Michlitz and Bothfeld. The perfect picture of a clergyman!

With a talented mind and spirit, invested with all the virtues of a Christian, he lived a quiet, simple yet happy life and was respected and loved by all who knew him.

His fine manner and sharp senses improved the many gatherings he was invited to and made everyone glad when he arrived."
