William Penn dies in Berkshire, England. A philosopher and entrepreneur, he founds the Pennsylvania Colony as a "Holy Experiment." William Penn wanted to learn whether a civil government could be run according to the moral standards of the Society of Friends without having to compromise.

The Pennsylvania Colony also provides a refuge for Quakers in Britain and through the colonies because they continue suffering periodic bouts of persecution.
