Under the leadership of John Robinson, English Separatists being emigrating to North America; eventually, they came to be known as the Pilgrims.

John Robinson himself does not accompany the first group of 35 Pilgrims on the Mayflower. He intends to join them eventually along with the rest of the dissenters who want to leave England, but he dies before he can make the voyage.

After his death, there is significant decline among the English separatists. They had wanted to emigrate to America precisely for the purpose of saving their community — they are persecuted in England and too small to be self-sustaining in Holland.
