Pope Clement X is born Emilio Bonaventura Altieri. Originally chosen as a compromise candidate after a difficult, five-month conclave, he will be 80 years old when he becomes pope.

Because of his age he will be a very weak leader, and his nephew, Cardinal Paluzzi degli Albertoni, is able to assume control over the day-to-day affairs of the papacy. Albertoni is a corrupt politician who abuses his position to enrich his family and reduce the powers of other church officials.

On the political front, Clement X will be forced to confront the growing threat of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. He will get help from successful military campaigns of John Sobieski, a Polish national hero who saves Poland from invasion and becomes king. King Louis XIV of France then takes money from the church to fund his own invasion of Holland, thus diverting funds Clement X would have used against the Turks.
